20% of Chinese toys unfit for kids Beijing, Mar 05: Quality inspectors have discovered that some toys made in China, the world's no one toy manufacturer, contained industrial waste and even gauze discarded by hospitals, causing allergy among children.

Only 80.8 per cent of toys were found qualified in a spot-check, as per a recent official national survey released by China's quality watchdog said.

The general administration of quality supervision, inspection and quarantine spot-checked 120 products manufactured by 108 firms in the major toy manufacturing belt in Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai recently.

Toy defects include unhealthy raw material, sharp edges, dangerous jut, inappropriate brochure and so on, the watchdog said.

The inspectors found over 25 per cent of toys unqualified in May last year in a spot-check.

China is the world's largest toy exporter with export accounting for 70 per cent of the world's total. However, safety remains a major problem for the giant toy manufacturer, the state-run Xinhua news agency commented.

For instance, some hairy dolls were discovered filled with industrial waste, such as black-coloured mouldy cotton or gauze discarded by hospitals, have caused allergy cases among kids, it said.
