Madurai (TN): Despite becoming part of a new
herd, love and affection for their mother simply refuses to
die, as two elephant calves, including a new born, have been
visiting daily the place, where their mother was buried in a
forest area in neighboring Virudhunagar district.
The female elephant had given birth to a calf on August 5
in Shenbagathoppu forest area near Srivilliputhur, about 80 km
from here, but died later following dehydration.
The new born and another three-year-old calf were seen
moving around the area in search of their mother.
Few days back, the two calves under the observation of
the forest department were introduced to a herd of four adult
elephants into their fold at a place nearly seven kilometres
from where the female elephant had died, forest officials
said.
The officials said they would monitor the calves for
another 10 days, keeping some distance from the herd, which
had started visiting the place where the calves' mother was
buried.
