Bhopal: Survivors of Bhopal Gas tragedy took out a rally demanding adequate compensation and justice for all the victims of the world`s worst industrial disaster.
A delegation from Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udhyog
Sangathan, led by its Convenor Abdul Jabbar, submitted a
memorandum addressed to President Pratibha Patil, through
Governor Rameshwar Thakur, demanding an increase in last
month`s compensation package for victims of the 1984 gas
tragedy, among other things.
The memorandum says the compensation covers just
47,207 victims including deceased, instead of 5,89,274 people,
including deceased, who were earlier found to be affected by
the toxic gas leak.
The Centre should soon file a curative petition in the
Apex Court against its order which diluted the charge against
the accused (now convicts) of the tragedy to Section 304 (a)
(death caused due to negligence) from Section 304 - II
(culpable homicide not amounting to murder), it said.
Earlier, the protesters mostly women gathered at
Yadagar-e-Shahjahani Park and marched down to Neelam Park from
where a delegation left for Raj Bhawan to hand over a
memorandum to the Governor.
