Indore: The half-day bandh call given by
Congress in Indore against rising crime and recent rape cases
today affected normal life in the city, police said.
The half-day bandh from 8 am to 2 pm went off peacefully
barring few incidents where some Congressmen tried to close
down shops, according to police.
Most of the markets in Jawahar Nagar, Cloth market, Saraf
Bazar, Marothiya Bazar, Bartan Bajar, Khujari Bazaar and
Rajwada remained closed.
The bandh call by Congress which coincided with the
nationwide bandh call given by trade unions partially affected
schools and colleges while city transport came to a halt in
the early hours.
Some Congress workers tried to burn the effigies of the
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and the state Home
Minister Uma Shankar Gupta at Gandhi Bhawan but were stopped
by the police.
The entire area near the District Congress office was
sealed and additional police force was deployed there as a
precautionary measure, police said.
District Congress President Pramod Tandon said that there
were three gang-rape cases in the district over the last
fortnight and the Shivraj government had failed to ensure
safety of women nor action against criminals initiated.
