Indore: Government-run M Y Hospital and
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College Dean, Dr M K Saraswat
today admitted that doctors conducted fourth-stage clinical
trials on the patients admitted in the hospitals on behalf of
a number of Multi National Companies (MNC).

"Doctors of different departments were conducting
fourth-stage clinical trials of drugs on patients in the
hospital for a number of MNCs. Earlier three stages were
conducted in European countries," Saraswat told PTI today.

According to available information, the fourth-stage
trials are considered as crucial because based on the results
of these trials the companies can obtain licence from their
respective governments to launch their products in the market.

Without naming any doctor, Saraswat said those who
conducted such trials have claimed that they had obtained
necessary permission to conduct experiments from the relevant
authorities.

When asked whether the college or the hospital
authorities have verified their claims, he said at present he
was not in a position to constitute any committee to look into
the matter as the issue was also pending in the State
Assembly.

However, Saraswat said that he was studying the present
rules and regulations in this regard.
