Hoshangabad (MP): The first open-air jail in Madhya Pradesh, which allows prisoners to live with their families, recently became functional here.
Built in an area of 17 acres at a cost of Rs 3.26 crore, the prison, the first of its kind in the state, presently houses only 25 selected prisoners from all over Madhya Pradesh, Jail Superintendent Usha Raj said.
The jail also has facilities for providing education to children of the prisoners to help them lead normal lives in the prison premises, she said.
Raj said employment-oriented programmes which can help prisoners become skillful and take up jobs upon being released are also being run in the jail.
She said taking a humanitarian view about prisoners, the state government has decided to open ITIs for jail inmates in Betul and Dhar.
