For the first time ever, flood waters enter sanctum-sanctorum of Ujjain's famed Mahakaleshwar temple

The sanctum-sanctorum of the Mahakaleshwar temple here, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country, was inundated following heavy rains since the last three days.

Ujjain: The sanctum-sanctorum of the Mahakaleshwar temple here, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country, was inundated following heavy rains since the last three days.

Due to heavy rains, the water entered into the Nandi Hall and sanctum-sanctorum of the temple forcing the priests to perform early morning Bhasma Arti in the same state, a temple official said.

It is probably for the first time in the history of the temple that rain water gushed into the sanctum-sanctorum, a priest claimed.

Ujjain Collector and Temple Committee Chairman, Kavindra Kiyawat said that due to heavy rains, water gushed into the Garbh Grah of the Mahakaleshwar temple this morning.

The water has been pumped out and instructions were given to the concerned authorities to ensure that water should not enter into the 'Garbh Grah' again.

Because of heavy rains, nearly 5,000 people were shifted to safer places in the city and educational institutions remained closed since last two days.

The district has recorded more than 25 inches rain in last three days, MeT department officials said.
