`IPS officer victim of mining mafia-police-politician nexus`
Indore: Slain IPS officer Narendra Kuamr Singh`s father Keshav Dev Wednesday alleged that the mining mafia-police-politician nexus in Madhya Pradesh was responsible for his son`s murder.
Keshav, a police sub-inspector in Aligarh, in his deposition before the special CBI court of Justice Anupam Srivastava today said illegal mining was "rampart" in Morena and local police connived with the mining mafia to scuttle his son`s efforts to curb illegalities.
"My son had told me that whenever he caught any tractor- trolley laden with illegal mined stones, there were calls from former IPS officer Rustam Singh, an ex-BJP leader and a former minister for releasing the vehicle," Keshav said during his examination by CBI`s senior public prosecutor A H Khan.
Narendra Kumar, posted as Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDoP) at Banmore, was murdered on March 8 in Morena district when he was trying to stop a tractor-trolley, laden with illegally mined stones. Later, CBI in its charge sheet termed the incident as a case of culpable homicide and held the vehicle`s driver Manoj Gujjar as sole accused.
"My son (Narendra) used to talk about rampant illegal mining and gambling-betting rackets in Morena district including Banmore where he was posted and wanted to expose them," Keshav said.
He told the court that Narendra even had call details of an IPS officer`s wife who used to call up a police constable whenever "there is any delay in receipt of extortion money from mining mafia".
"Constable Rajkumar allegedly played a major role in illegal mining as he was posted for the last five years at Banmore police station," Keshav claimed.
He alleged that police and mafia were hand-in-glove in the district as some policemen would leak information regarding proposed raids to gamblers in advance.
"The IG wanted him (Narendra) to stop/seize at least five tractors laden with illegal mining under a special campaign. The then Banmore Thana in-charge and his staff were not supporting my son on checking illegal mining.
"Whenever I asked the thana in-charge used to say I have to take care my kids, I will not be able to take action against illegal miners," Keshav said quoting his son when the former had come to visit him in February.
Keshav alleged that the then SP had advised his son "to keep away from the mining mafia".
He also claimed that local police did not inform the family about Narendra`s death and he was not given the copy of the FIR and the postmortem report. "I had taken up the body of my son to our native village Lalpur in Mathura district for cremation on March 9, 2012," he added.
Keshav claimed that the then IG of Chambal range had threatened him of scuttling the probe if he "tried to act smart".
He said police could have taken his son to hospitals in Gwalior which is nearby to the site of murder, but they did not do so.
During his cross examination by accused Manoj Gurjar`s lawyer Mahendra Morya, Keshav said his son was mowed down by the tractor trolley.
He denied knowledge of any such information that the IPS officer was hit by the tractor driver in his stomach when he stopped the trolley.
The special CBI court has framed charges against Manoj under Section 304 (culpable homicide) and 353 (use of criminal force to prevent government official from discharging his duties) of IPC and Section 181 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Till now, eleven witnesses have appeared before court in the murder case. CBI has, however, rejected the involvement of mining mafia, as claimed by the deceased`s father.
