MP: Suspended cop surrenders in woman professor's suicide abetment case

Suspended police inspector Upmanyu Saxena, who was absconding after being charged with abetment to suicide of a woman professor, surrendered at a police station here.

Bhopal: Suspended police inspector Upmanyu Saxena, who was absconding after being charged with abetment to suicide of a woman professor, surrendered at a police station here.

Saxena was suspended after his name figured in the case in May this year and since then he was evading arrest. He surrendered last evening, Misrod police station in-charge Anil Shukla said on Thursday.

The inspector was allegedly in a relationship with an assistant professor working at a private college, police said quoting a complaint filed earlier by the woman's family.

The woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her flat in Misrod on May 11, police said.

Saxena later informed police about the incident and then disappeared.

Her family members had alleged that she was forced into a physical relationship with the suspended police officer at gun point.

A local court had in June declared him an absconder after police could not trace him, despite an arrest warrant issued against him.

After all his efforts to secure relief from courts proved futile, the inspector surrendered at Misrod police station following which he was formally arrested, Shukla said.

Police will produce him before a local court today to seek his custody for further probe, he added.
