Need to change preference for male child: MP CM

MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that there was an urgent need to change the mindset under which couples preferred having boys over girl child.

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister
Shivraj Singh Chouhan said here on Tuesday that there was an urgent
need to change the mindset under which couples preferred
having boys over girl child.
In an informal chat with reporters at his residence a
day before the launch of the `Beti Bachao Abhiyan`," the Chief
Minister said that in case the mindset does not change, the
situation may become very bad in near future.

Chouhan said it was sad to note that the sex ratio was
bad among the rich, the urban dwellers and the educated while
it was good among the poor, rural dwellers and the uneducated.

He said in Madhya Pradesh, the sex ratio was very
good in tribal districts possibly because the facility of
sex-determination tests was not available there.

Chouhan said that much before he became a MLA, he had
begun working for the girl child and added this process
continued even when he became a MP and then the State Chief
Minister.

The Chief Minister said he knew that the "Beti Bachao
Abhiyan" would not be successful if it was run by the
government alone.
He said that for the Abhiyan to succeed, it was
essential that the society was also involved in it in as many
ways possible.
