Bhopal: Over 70 per cent polling was recorded on Monday in the by-polls at Kukshi and Sonkatch assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh where elections passed off peacefully.

Kukshi recorded over 70 per cent polling while at Sonkatch, over 80 per cent voters exercised their right to franchise, State Joint Election Officer Dhyaneshwar B Patil said.

No untoward incident was reported from any part of the twin assembly segments. About 100 out of a total of 243 polling booths were sensitive in Sonkatch, while 15 out of the 179 polling booths were sensitive in Kukshi, he said.

The by-election was necessitated in Kukshi due to death of the Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Jamuna Devi, while Sonkatch seat fell vacant after Sajjan Singh Verma became a Member of Parliament and resigned.

BJP has fielded former MP Phoolchand Verma's son Rajendra Verma from Sonkatch, while state minister Ranjana Baghel's husband Mukam Singh Kirade is their nominee from Kukshi.

Congress has fielded Jamuna Devi's niece Nisha Singhar from Kukshi and MP Sajjan Singh Verma's nephew Arjun Verma from Sonkatch.

There were 1,56,821 and 1,17,972 voters in Sonkatch and Kukshi constituencies respectively.

Counting of votes would be held on February 17 in both the constituencies.
