Kanpur: A hostel warden of a private engineering college here was arrested today in connection with an incident in which a student attempted suicide by drinking insecticide after being allegedly ragged by his seniors.

"Acting on a complaint filed by the victim's father, hostel warden Warden R N Nigam has been arrested," SP (Rural) Lal Bahadur said.

However, police is yet to identify and take action against the senior students, he said.

Vishal Yadav, a student of Computer Engineering in Pranvir Singh College, on September 6 had tried to end his life by consuming mosquito repellent after being subjected to alleged ragging by his seniors.

Meanwhile, chairman of the institute, Pranvir Singh said, "The college authorities have terminated the services of two officials and suspended four administration staff and 10 security guards."

The move came in the wake of a show cause notice issued to the college by the district administration in which it had asked the institute to explain the allegations as it is the second incident reported within a week, failing which the administration will recommend to the state government that the college be de-recognised.

In a similar incident in the college on August 29, another student Rajanshu Singh was allegedly ragged by his seniors following which he had to be admitted to hospital.
