Khandwa (MP): Three persons, including a new born baby, were killed and five others injured when the jeep in which they were travelling hit a truck near here, police said today.

The incident took place last night on Ichhapur-Indore highway, around 25 kms from here. One Jaswant Singh along with his pregnant daughter-in-law Kalpana, sarpanch Laxman Babu and others, was travelling in a jeep to a hospital in Sanawad area when Kalpana started experiencing labour pains, they said.

The woman delivered the baby in the vehicle enroute to the hospital. Singh, however, did not stop and decided to take Kalpana and the newborn to Sanawad for medical aid, Additional Superintendent of Police, Gopal Khandel said today.

While they were on their way, the jeep hit a truck head-on coming from the opposition direction, killing Laxman, Kalpana and her child on the spot, he said.

Those injured were admitted to a hospital in Indore in a critical condition. Khandel said the truck driver fled from the spot and efforts are on to nab him.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on, he added.
