Women who cross limits, will be punished like Sita: Vijayvargiya

New Delhi: At a time when the clamour for stringent laws for dealing crime against women has become louder, a senior BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh has stirred a fresh controversy by saying that those women who cross their limits, pay huge price.

Reports, Friday, claimed that Kailash Vijayvargiya, a BJP leader and Cabinet Minister in the MP government, said quoting Ramayana, “Ek hi shabd hai - Maryada. Maryada ka ulanghan hota hai, toh Sita-haran ho jata hai. Laxman-rekha har vyakti ki khichi gayi hai. Us Laxman-rekha ko koi bhi par karega, toh Rawan samne baitha hai, woh Sita-haran karke le jayega."

Vijayvargiya’s irresponsible statement suggesting that those women, who breach their moral limits, deserve punishment has come as a major embarrassment for the main opposition party.

The BJP leader said that if a woman crosses her limits she will be punished, just like Sita was abducted by Ravana.

However, this is not the first time when politicians have made such adverse remarks on women. In past, there have been several instances when even educated and influential persons have cast aspersions on the character of victims of sexual harassment.

Recently, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had termed the Park Street rape as a CPM conspiracy against her.

Not only this, one of her party colleagues Kakoli Ghosh also recently stated that the Park Street case was not a rape, but a "misunderstanding" between the woman "and her clients".

Correct observation. Articulating it is neither irresponsible nor embarassing. Women should have freedom. But like all freedom, there are duties to be respected. Even assuming that there are no responsibilities, it is true that a Ravan is waiting on the other side of the Lakshman Rekha.

Neta and their kin daily crosses the laxman rekha. Than what your govt is doing in this matter. I should advise BJP team to remove these people from their party so that torn images can be saved from further damage.

The words said by the politician are correct and he meant to say the right thing. Everything in this world has its limit, be it any anything, if some one crosses the limit then he/she has to pay for it.

this comment by a public elected public servant is atrocious! Why cant women live equally? is the copyright of living life according to 1`s own wish is being held by men only? actual hyprocrites are men.. mandir main jis devi ko chadar udhate hain ushi ko bahar nanga karte hain! now a days marwaris are so open minded.. i just cant believe that he said this. i am a marwari too and i feel ashamed that we have such ppl also.

This logic apply only for woman not for criminals? Give the guns to the women and then define the lakshman-rekha..how long our ministers will give irresponsible statements. we live in India and we forgot our sanskar to respect women as mother & sister.

Bravo Mr. Kailash Vijayvargyia. You have not even understood Ramcharit Manas. Sita never crossed her Maryada. It was her maryada not to return a sadhu empty hands from her doors for that she a restiction called laxman rekha. This was to save maryada only that she was cheated by a demon like ravana. And why laxman rekha for Sita only Even males like you have laxman rekha which you are used to cross very often. In ram chatit manas, lord Rama was called Maryada Purshottam and it was not for the heck of it. Please recheck your knowledge and interpretation of great epic.
