7 farmers committed suicide in Vidarbha since Jan1, 2011: NGO

The latest case is that of Dhrupatabai Rathod, who owned four acres of agricultural land in the district and owed Rs 35,000 loan to a bank in Fulsavangi village, it said.

Yavatmal: Seven debt-ridden farmers,
including three from Yavatmal district, have committed suicide
in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra in the first three days of
2011, a non-governmental organisation Vidarbha Jan Andolan
Samiti (VJAS) said on Wednesday.

The latest case is that of Dhrupatabai Rathod, who owned
four acres of agricultural land in the district and owed Rs
35,000 loan to a bank in Fulsavangi village, it said.

According to VJAS president Kishore Tiwari, Rathod, who
was distressed following damages caused to cotton crop on her
field due to unseasonal rains, committed suicide by consuming
pesticide on Monday.

The other deceased have been identified as Prakash Pawar
and Rahul Karthode (both Yavatmal district), Ravindra Kondane
(Akola), Motiram Mohurle (Wardha), Kalamkar Sawarbandhe
(Bhandara) and Ghotu Jabhorkar (Amravati), he said.
