828 killed on Mumbai-Goa highway in last three years: Minister

As many as 828 people have died in accidents on the Mumbai-Goa highway in the last three years, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was informed on Monday.

Home Minister R R Patil, in a written reply to a question on the issue, said between 2010 and 2012, 828 people died and 2,411 were seriously injured on this highway.

Irresponsible driving was one of the main reasons for the accidents, he added.

At present, seven highway police help centres are responsible for traffic regulation on the highway. Work on its four laning is in progress.

After the work is completed, the requirement of setting up of police highway centres and traffic chowkies will be examined, he said.
