Mumbai: At least two people were killed and 55 others were injured, including 45 policemen, on Saturday as a protest at Mumbai's Azad Maidan against the Assam riots and alleged attacks on Muslims in Myanmar turned violent.

Among the injured were some mediapersons. All injured were shifted to J J Hospital, St George Hospital, GT Hospital and Bombay Hospital, police said.

Hundreds of protesters, sporting black badges, belonging to several Muslim organisations were gathered at the Azad Maidan Ground in south Mumbai on a call given by a city-based outfit, Raza Academy, an organisation which claims to work for promoting Islamic culture.

The agitation was supported by other organisations like Sunni Jamaitul Ulma and Jamate Raza-e-Mustafa. Awami Vikas Party (AVP), a political outfit floated by former police officer Shamsher Khan Pathan, also took part in the protest.

During the demonstrations, the protesters turned unruly, police said. They indulged in stone-pelting, set fire to several vehicles, including OB (Outside Broadcast) vans of three private news channels, reports said.

Police had to resort to lathi-charge and opened fire in the air to disperse the violent crowd.

The situation is currently under control, said IG Law and Order, Mumbai.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said in a statement that the Crime Branch has been asked to probe "whose hand was behind the violence and how the protest turned so violent".

Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil while talking to Zee News appealed people to maintain peace.

Several suburban train services were briefly disrupted and road traffic was also affected due to the unrest.

Azad Maidan Ground, a regular venue for protests, is located near Mumbai civic body headquarters and CST Mumbai railway station. The bustling area wore a deserted look as policemen cordoned off the locality and patrolled the streets.

Meanwhile, Raza Academy distanced itself from the violence.

"While we were protesting at the ground, some people got aggressive and started behaving violently," Mohammed Saeed, general secretary of Raza Academy said.

"We never encourage violence and strongly condemn such acts," he added.

Majaroity of countrys in the world are muslim countrys majority of population surrounding india is muslim population if any injustice is done on any muslim over there why the reaction comes from india what some muslims in our country wants to prove and whether it solves the problem. secoundly at azad maidan how the state government permitted this unkonwn org to take meeting or rally at azad maidan on same venue anna hazare was refused to organise peaceful and non voilence rally by the same government imp incidenence to be noted yesterday protest rally a) NEARLY 40PPOLICEMEN WERE BEATEN BY THE MOB. b)SOME LADY POLIWOMEN WERE MOLESTED. C) WEAPEONS WERE SNACTHED FROM THE POLICE .this is a serious law and order situation .But i would like to assure the citizen of my country that there will be no action against those created the trouble reason is simple this government is suppose to face election in 2014 or may be before that . when will this dirty politics will stop who will save our nation.

This incident has created a havoc in our own land i.e. Assam. The Central Govt. and State Govt should understand the root cause of these riots in Assam. Assam shared a major portion of international borders with Bangladesh. The international border should be checked out and proper measures should be taken to stop immigrants bangladeshis, otherwise a time will come when all local people of Assam will be killed by muslims bangladeshis and Assam will become a muslim dominated state or country.

When will muslims (those who were a part of this idiotic violence) look into their own households rather than other countries and issues which don`t concern them? When will these crazy bigoted Mullas/ Maulanas stop inciting muslims for their own hidden agendas? When will education/ cleanliness/ harmony/ discipline be the foremost items of discussion for muslims in India? These people have shamed the entire nation and all muslims who live right and are good citizens. When will the Politicians stop taking advantage of such incidents? When will the Police/ Administration work properly and prevent such incidents? Well...I could just ask questions to which I know there are no answers right now. Hope things change!! Having said that I am surprised at such a shocked reaction by people. Last time when there was a petrol hike announced, MNS/ SHiv Sena goons burnt 24 BEST buses...people were thrashed for going to work and keeping shops open. Have you forgotten the Kannada Actor Raj Kumar`s death and what happened next. India is a crazy country and these type of violent protests/ incidents are a matter of routine. Nothing will change if the change doesn`t start from the Top..the politicians have to realise that they are taking this great country to dogs!! May good sense prevail and the centre/ state/ administration/ police/ people come together for a better future!! Jai Hind

We need to understand that country comes b4 anything and in Assam, its Bodos vs Bangladeshi... And even if they r Nepali, Chinies or American, they should be sent back their countries. There were no need of doing any protest by Indian Muslims.

We condemn the killing of Innocent muslims in Burma as well as Assam. But i am not surprised with the biased nature of World Media over the killing of muslims as it has always been the case. All other non sense are shown in the name of news but when it comes to muslims all the media are silent. Their silence only reflects their mindset for a particular cimmunity.I only prary to God to protect muslims where ever they are targetted. Is the killing of innocent muslim not a act of terrorisim.

There are many Muslim countries in the world. If any Muslim in India finds difficult to live, let him leave this country and go to his choice of country. This is good for India also.
