Thane: In order to make enough drinking
water available, the Thane district administration has planned to dig around 2,500 wells in the district, especially in the tribal region.

Thane district Collector A L Jarhad told this to.

"Analysis by water experts alongwith a ground water team
revealed that there was a huge stock of ground water. However,
since it is not utilised in a proper fashion, it is leading to
the water scarcity," Jarhad said.

"Hence it has been decided to go in for a maximum number of wells in the district to overcome this situation," he said.
He added that a target of 2,500 wells has been set. "So
far, a total of 900 wells have already been dug up and handed
over to the villagers and the balance would be completed
within the next six months ending March 2012."

He said this task would not only fulfil the needs of the
villagers, but also generate employment opportunities for
many.

He also said that an assistance of around Rs 47 crore
under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee
Schme (MGNREGS) would be sought.
