Mumbai: The Worli police arrested the 19-year-old son of a businessman for allegedly dashing his Mercedes into another car while trying to overtake it on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in the early hours of Saturday.
However, he was released on bail soon after as he had not been driving drunk, the police said.
Three people in the other car were injured and admitted to hospital.
The arrested youth has been identified as Jasbir Jagjit Parmar, a resident of Saat Rasta.
According to senior inspector Deepak Pawar, the incident took place around 2.30 am on the sea link’s south-bound lane.
“Parmar was speeding and rammed his Mercedes into a Maruti that was ahead of him, while trying to overtake it. Maruti car’s driver Shyamnarayan Ardekar, 38, and two others seated in it, Soni Premsingh, 28, and Nandkumar Dalvi, 48, sustained injuries,” said Pawar.
He added that the sea link security staff informed the police about the accident. A police team immediately rushed to the spot and took the three injured to Nanavati Hospital in Vile Parle.
Pawar said, “Ardekar is a resident of Vakola and the complainant in the case. Parmar wasn’t drunk at the time of the accident and didn’t try to flee. He was booked under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public road), 337 (endangering life) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code as well as under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.”
