Mumbai: The CBI is conducting raids at the
offices and residences of 14 customs officials in Mumbai, Navi
Mumbai and Pune after receiving reports that they were taking
bribes from a Customs House Agent (CHA).

The customs offices located at Nhava Sheva Port (Navi
Mumbai), Mumbai`s Ballard estate and Pune are being raided, a
senior CBI Anti-Corruption Bureau official said.

"For the last few months, we have been working on the
information that a CHA is giving bribes in the form of cash
and articles to 14 officials to ensure clearance of goods
imported or exported by his customers. We suspect that this
would have resulted in evasion of taxes," the official said.

The CHA`s house and office were also raided, the official
added.

CHAs are licensed to act as agents for transaction of any
business relating to import or export of goods at any Customs
station.
