Mumbai: CBI on Friday recorded the statement of Defence Estates Officer Veena Maitra in connection with the Adarsh Society scam, officials said.

"The Estates officer said RC Thakur, general secretary of the Society in south Mumbai, was with the Defence Ministry when he first floated the idea of Adarsh society," a CBI
official said.

CBI, which is conducting the probe into the scam, had on November 15 registered a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) in connection with the scam.

"According to Maitra, the then defence estates officer had given the first No Objection Certificate to the Society," the official said.

CBI is likely to question several other officials from various departments of the state government, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and 103 members of the
Society.

The Housing Society, built on prime land, was constructed in alleged violation of various rules and regulations.

The building originally meant to be a six-storey structure was later extended to 31 floors.
