Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan Tuesday night urged Anna Hazare to end his fast after he developed 102 degrees temperature but the anti-corruption crusader declined the request.

Chavan told Times Now television that he made the appeal over the telephone to the 74-year-old Hazare, who began a three-day hunger strike here Tuesday morning in support of a strong Lokpal.

"I requested him to call off his fast," the chief minister said. "I told him that after parliament`s voting, he is free to continue his agitation. But he must take care of his health."

Asked about his response, Chavan said: "He said doctors are examining him and he will consider the request."
Earlier, Hazare confidant Arvind Kejriwal said Anna was not ready to call off the fast at the MMRDA ground despite falling sick and running 102 degrees temperature.

His doctor D.G. Pote announced from the stage that Hazare was weak, his blood pressure had shot up by 30 points to 170/96, and his pulse rate was poor.

"This is unfortunate," the doctor said. "When he fasts, he is always on the stage. This is the first time he is resting in the back."
The doctor said although the fast began only Tuesday, his failure to eat adequate food the past few days because of cold had added to the problem.

Kejriwal said he and his colleagues had been doing their best to persuade Anna to give up the fast.

"He is not agreeing. He refuses to break his fast. No one can have medicines on empty stomach," he said, speaking after the doctor gave his assessment.

His colleague Kiran Bedi added that Hazare "is a very determined man and he has said he will not end his fast".

Another doctor attending on him, Aniruddha Dharmadhikari, said there was no need to admit him to hospital Tuesday night. A decision would be taken Wednesday morning.

But he warned that Hazare`s health might deteriorate if he continued his fast.

Doctors from JJ Hospital are at the protest venue monitoring his health.
They kept a damp cloth on his forehead in a bid to bring the temperature down.
