Mumbai: A CID probe has been ordered into last Sunday`s communal clashes and subsequent police firing in Maharashtra`s Dhule town that left five dead and nearly 200 injured, police said on Saturday.

"The CID will investigate the matter from all possible angles and also inquire if any provocative speeches were made to escalate violence," a top police officer told PTI.

The Crime Investigation Department`s (CID) Nashik wing will investigate the criminal conspiracy angle and the possible involvement of an organised group in the attack on policemen.

Institution of a CID inquiry comes days after state`s Minority Affairs Minister Arif Naseem Khan demanded a judicial probe and expressed disappointment over the way the police handled the situation.

Nineteen police officers and 102 constables were also injured in the violence in the northwestern Maharashtra town a part of which was under curfew for several days after clashes broke out between two communities over payment of bills at an eatery.

Police had registered cases under relevant IPC sections against unidentified persons for destruction of property and obstructing public servants from performing their duty, in connection with the clashes.

Kishore Wagh, the owner of Maratha Mutton shop, the eatery where the scuffle broke out before erupting in large-scale clashes, was arrested for inciting violence and remanded in police custody till January 13.
