Thane: A local court has directed the district police to seize nearly 3,000 cattle and hand them over to an organisation that protects them.
The district court admitted a petition filed yesterday by the Bharatiya Govansha Rakshan Sanvardhan Parishad and directed the police to give compliance of the order on October 30.
The court observed that it had to interfere in the matter as the police failed to act on various complaints regarding the issue.
In its petition, the parishad informed the court that even though the police had filed several cases of illegal trafficking of cattle, they had failed to seize the animals and hence they (parishad) had to rush to the court as an urgent measure to seek relief.
Chief Judicial Magistrate M B Patil last evening issued the orders in which he directed the police to seize the cattle in the presence of five members of the parishad and also get the animals examined through a government veterinary officer.
In the application to the court, the parishad stated that theres was a social organisation engaged in looking after the welfare of animals, their preservation and protection.
It also stated that it had filed various complaints under sections 6, 9 and 11 of Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976 and under various provisions of Maharashtra Keeping and Movement of Cattle in Urban Areas (Control) Act.
In their complaint, they further pointed out that near about 3,000 cattle had been brought within the areas under the jurisdiction of the Thane police for the purpose of slaughtering, in contravention of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act (MAPA) 1976.
