Thane: Police today resorted to lathicharge after they faced resistance from an unruly mob that pelted them and a civic squad with stones to protest demolition of an illegal office of a political party in Kopri area.

The demolition squad of Thane Municipal Corporation accompanied by police had gone to the area to raze the office of Nationalist Congress Party corporator Bharat Chavan, police said.

The drive was part of the crackdown on illegal offices of political parties on directions of the Bombay High Court.
As the word spread about the arrival of the team, the supporters of Chavan gathered at the spot and started pelting stones at police and the civic workers, they said.

According to police, the situation is under control and demolition work will be resumed soon.
