Mumbai: The State Election Commission (SEC) has asked the political parties to stop using animals during their election campaigns.

The SEC has issued this order in a bid to stop cruelty towards animals during the election campaign.

State Election Commissioner Neela Satyanarayan said that it had been brought to her notice that some candidates and political parties use animals for their campaign or during protest agitations.

Buffalows, elephants, donkeys and other animals, used for campaign, are treated in an inhuman manner. Chain of footwear is tied to donkeys and their faces are blackened, she said, adding that such acts are violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

She added that candidates have been told not to use animals for their election campaign or processions. Instructions have been issued to the concerned authorities to take strict action against those who violate animal protection laws.
