Mumbai: Fashion designer Riyaz Gangji and
his driver were arrested on charges of rioting and criminal
intimidation after allegedly assaulting senior citizens of a
building in suburban Santacruz where the designer recently
purchased two flats, police said Sunday.
Gangji, his driver Izaaz Khan (22) and five others
started arguing with the members of New Sujata Housing Society
building in Juhu Tara Road after the latter objected to the
designer`s plans to make changes in the premises, police said.
"Gangji and Khan were arrested last night while five
others including women are absconding," Santacruz Police
Station Senior Inspector, Madhukar Chaudhari said.
The duo were produced before a local holiday court which
granted them bail, he added.
According to police, 41-year-old Gangji, a resident of
Lokhandwala area and a well-known designer for whom several
Bollywood personalities have walked the ramp, had purchased
one flat each on ground and first floor of the building
"He undertook renovation work of his two flats. He was
also altering the premises of the building to make a garden
without the permission of the housing society. This was
objected by the society members but Gangji refused to pay heed
to their objections," Chaudhari said.
After a while, a heated argument erupted between Gangji
and society members, Chaudhari said.
