Mumbai: Fashion designer Riyaz Gangji and his driver were arrested on charges of rioting and criminal intimidation after allegedly assaulting senior citizens of a building in suburban Santacruz where the designer recently purchased two flats, police said Sunday.

Gangji, his driver Izaaz Khan (22) and five others started arguing with the members of New Sujata Housing Society building in Juhu Tara Road after the latter objected to the designer's plans to make changes in the premises, police said.

"Gangji and Khan were arrested last night while five others including women are absconding," Santacruz Police Station Senior Inspector, Madhukar Chaudhari said.

The duo were produced before a local holiday court which granted them bail, he added.

According to police, 41-year-old Gangji, a resident of Lokhandwala area and a well-known designer for whom several Bollywood personalities have walked the ramp, had purchased one flat each on ground and first floor of the building recently.

"He undertook renovation work of his two flats. He was also altering the premises of the building to make a garden without the permission of the housing society. This was objected by the society members but Gangji refused to pay heed to their objections," Chaudhari said.

After a while, a heated argument erupted between Gangji and society members, Chaudhari said.
