Firm owner, accountant held for sales tax fraud

Thane: A firm owner and his accountant have been booked by Thane Nagar police here for fabricating records and failure to pay Sales Tax to the tune of Rs 11 crores, police said on Thursday.

Police Inspector S R Gaikwad of Nagar Police station said that the duo--Director D T Shah and accountant S N Shah, of the Aristro Adifame India a company situated in Navi Mumbai; have been booked under sections 465, 468, 471 and 420 of IPC.

According to the complaint filed with the police by Sales Tax Officer Bhagwan Koli, the company had during the period 2000-2005 made a business of around Rs 74 crores for which they should paid a sum of Rs 11.32 crores towards Sales Tax at the rate of 15.3 per cent.

The company officials fabricated the documents to escape payment of Salex Tax the complaint stated. It also prepared fake sales register and submitted it to the department and filed the return with nil tax payment.

Similarly, the company also gave false addresses of suppliers from Chennai and Hyderabad to mislead the Sales Tax officials the complaint stated.

The Sales Tax officials during scrutiny of the records came across the serious lapses and fraud and filed a complaint against the duo which is being probed further by the Thane Nagar police.
