Flautist Chaurasia`s sons file defamation suit against him

Sons of noted flautist Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia have filed a defamation suit against their father alleging they have been portrayed as illegitimate children in the septuagenarian musician`s biography.

Mumbai: Sons of noted flautist Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia have filed a defamation suit against their father alleging they have been portrayed as illegitimate children in the septuagenarian musician`s biography.

Justice Anoop Mohta of the Bombay High Court yesterday
rejected the plea of Vinay and Ajay Chaurasia for an permanent
injunction against the publication of the biography "Woodwinds
of Change", authored by Surjit Singh, but asked the flautist
and the writer to file affidavits within six weeks.

The duo said he biography gives an impression that
they are illegitimate children. They have claimed damages of
Rs one lakh from their father and the writer.

The book says Chaurasia had two wives and that he
first married Anuradha and then Kamala while the petitioners
claim that he first married their mother Kamala.

Both Vinay and Ajay argued that this gives an
impression that marriage of their mother took place after
Anuradha`s and thus they become illegitimate children under
Hindu Marriage Act.

The biography was released on July 1, 2008, on the
occasion of Chaurasia`s 70th birthday.

Vinay and Ajay asserted that their father married
Kamala in 1957 and Anuradha in 1962. However, the biography
says that Chaurasia secretly married Anuradha on August 15,
1958. Thereafter, he was called to his home town Allahabad by
his father. On his return, Kamala accompanied him.

Three years later, on Anuradha`s request, Kamala moved
in with the flautist along with her two sons. Rajeev was born
after that. There was great understanding between the two
wives, the biography said.
