Four people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with an attack on a Catholic church in Navi Mumbai on Saturday.

Mumbai: Four people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with an attack on a Catholic church in Navi Mumbai on Saturday.

"Four persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on the Saint George Catholic church," Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner KL Prasad told PTI.

The arrests came a day after after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he has directed police to arrest within 48 hours the culprits who hurled stones at the church.

Fadnavis is expected to make a statement in the Maharashtra Assembly in connection with the case.

The incident had occurred in the wee hours of Saturday when two masked persons riding pillion on a motorcycle hurled stones at the Saint George Catholic church located near a bridge in New Panvel area.

In the incident, the covering glass outside the statue of Saint George got damaged.

While the attacks on churches and other minority institutions continue in various parts of the country, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said everything will be done to ensure their security.

Commenting on the recent attacks on churches, the Home Minister said, “I will go to any extent to protect minorities. I will do everything to end the sense of insecurity prevailing among minorities.”
