HC asks Union govt to make statement on Vohra panel report

The Bombay High Court today asked the Union Government what steps were taken following the Vohra Committee report on criminalisation of politics, which dates back to October 1993.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court today asked
the Union Government what steps were taken following the Vohra
Committee report on criminalisation of politics, which dates
back to October 1993.

The division bench of Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice V
K Tahilramani was hearing a petition filed by Shiv Sena worker
Purushottam Barde seeking inquiry into Rane`s statement
post-Mumbai terror attack that some politicians had provided
money and logistical support to terrorists.

Rane later said his comments were based on the Vohra
Committee Report on criminalisation of politics, which was
published in October 1993.

The division bench asked the Government to make a
statement next week regarding action on the Vohra report.

The judges also remarked that Rane seemed to have gone
"overboard" while making the statement a few days after the
Mumbai terror attack.

"Only he went overboard and made statements that he will
give names of persons," Justice Desai said.

The judges said they did not want to get into political
aspects, but would direct the Central Government to take steps
to implement the Vohra Committee Report.
