If built illegally, demolish Adarsh: Maha CM

Maha CM said that if the Adarsh housing society building in Mumbai was constructed "illegally" then it should be demolished.

New Delhi: Maharashtra Chief Minister
Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said that if the Adarsh housing society
building in Mumbai was constructed "illegally" then it should
be demolished.

"If the building was built illegally, it should be
demolished", he said at an awards function in Delhi.

Chavan was appointed as the Chief Minister after his
predecessor Ashok Chavan resigned as his name also surfaced in
the scam.

The Environment ministry has said that the 31-storey
building located in Mumbai`s upmarket locality at Colaba, was
unauthorised and had been built after flouting Coastal
Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules.

"The unauthorised structure should be removed in its
entirety and the area should be restored to its original
condition", the ministry had said in its 29-page order.

Several politicians, top defence personnel and
bureaucrats and their relatives own flats in the high-rise
building.

The Adarsh scam hit the headlines late last year
indicating a collusion among the powers-that-be to bend rules
for constructing the building at a site meant for residential
complex for retired defence personnel.

Examining the legality of the housing project from
environmental angle, the ministry asked the society to remove
the structure on its own within three months.
