Maha DGP defends police in Maval firing case

Pune: Maharashtra DGP Ajit Parasnis on Saturday
came out in defence of Pune rural police for the August 9
firing episode in Maval near Pune, in which three persons were
"Pune rural police fired at the crowd after they got
trapped from all sides," Parasnis said at a felicitation
function organised by Pune police ahead of his retirement on
30 September.

"The firing was done from service revolvers. The video
clip of the incident clearly shows that the agitators were
beyond the range of police revolvers. Many police were injured
in the incident and the action taken against a few police
officers was not due to firing, but due to their behavior," he
The DGP said that the investigation into the Maval police
firing was in progress and police would find out the truth
very soon.

Parasnis also blamed the electronic media for repeatedly
showing the incident on TV and creating panic among the

Three farmers, including a woman, were killed in police
firing near Baur village on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway last
month, when the farmers were agitating against the proposed
water pipeline project from Pavana dam to Pimpri Chinchwad in
Pune district.

The incident had rocked the state assembly session and
Parliament as well.
