Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday
informed the High Court that it will prosecute a former member
of the Legislative assembly for submitting bogus medical
bills.
Ramesh Chaudhary (Congress), a former MLA from Jalgaon,
would be prosecuted as the committee appointed by Speaker of
the Assembly and the Chairman of the Legislative Council had
recommended action under the criminal law against him,
government pleader G W Matos said.
FIR will be filed at Jalgaon, he said.
MLAs and their dependent relatives get reimbursement of
medical bills, but a PIL filed by city-based Janhit Manch had
alleged that in many cases fake bills are submitted.
A high-powered committee was later appointed to
scrutinise bills passed in the last four years, and it was
found that many bills should not have been passed. The total
amount reimbursed against such bills was over Rs 40 lakh.
Chaudhary`s case was found to be most outrageous. He had
claimed Rs 20,82,285 in reimbursement.
Following the government`s statement on Chaudhary, High
Court today disposed of the PIL.
