Mumbai: The special sitting of the Maharashtra
Legislative Council called on Friday morning to discuss the issue
of compensation payable to farmers for losses due to
unseasonal rains early this year was stalled with the
opposition staging protest demanding more time to express
their views.

The special sitting began at 10 am with a speech by the
opposition leader in the council Pandurang Phundkar, who had
moved the proposal to hold discussion on the subject.

But after 10 minutes, the presiding officer Mohan Joshi
asked Phundkar to complete his speech which upset him and he
staged a walk out from the House.

He was supported by other opposition MLCs leading to
adjournments of the House for almost 1 and an half hour.

"Farmers had to face destruction of crops due to
excessive rainfall. I had moved a proposal in this regard to
discuss the issue. But within 10-12 minutes, the presiding
officer rang the bell asking me to finish my speech," Phundkar
told reporters.

He said that the opposition would again move a proposal
to hold discussion on the subject on Monday.
