Mumbai: Prithviraj alias Roman Shivajirao Sathe of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is leading in the Kaij reserved constituency, for which counting of votes began Friday morning.

Sathe’s main opponent in Kaij scheduled caste (SC) reserved assembly constituency in Beed district is Sangeeta Thombre of the BJP.

After the seventh round of counting, Sathe is ahead by over 5000 votes.

The by-election was necessitated because of the emise of sitting NCP MLA Dr.Vimaltai Mundada.

Although, her son Akshay and husband Nandkishore Mundada were the natural choices but they could not contest since they belonged to the Marwari community as against the stipulation that the candidate be from the SC community by birth.

That led to the selection of Prithviraj Sathe as the party’s candidate.
