Amravati: To press for their demand for a
separate statehood, around 550 Vidarbha supporters today
raised slogans and waived black flags at a government-
sponsored programme to celebrate Maharashtra Day here.

The trouble started minutes after Maharashtra Labour
Minister Hasan Mushrif hoisted the flag at Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium. As he stood up to address the function, Vidarbha
supporters led by Morshi MLA Anil Bonde (independent) waived
black flags and shouted slogans in support of their demand.

Police intervened to control the situation and asked
Bonde, who is also Vidarbha Rajya Jan Sangram Samiti (VRJSS)
district convenor, and his supporters to leave the stadium.

After coming out of the stadium, the demonstrators
resumed slogan shouting.

Later, Mushrif met a delegation of Vidarbha supporters.
During the meeting, Bonde told the minister that it was their
birth right to fight for Vidarbha`s statehood, VRJSS members
said.

Vidarbha was needlessly merged with Maharashtra in 1960
and to protest the decision, May 1 is being observed as "Black
Day" in the region, Bonde said.
He requested Mushrif to communicate their feelings on
statehood to the President, Prime Minister and Maharashtra
Chief Minister.
