Nagpur: Maharashtra legislators are all set to get about 40 per cent jump in their salary and allowances with the state Assembly on Thursday adopting a bill in this regard.

Their monthly pay and perks will increase from about Rs 55,000 now to Rs 76,000, according to the statement of objects and reason of the bill.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshwardhan Patil moved the bill to amend the original Act of 1978 which covers salaries and allowance of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Opposition Leaders and others.

Once the bill becomes a law, it will put an additional burden of nearly Rs 16 crore on the state exchequer.

The bill, passed by voice vote, was brought considering the overall inflationary trends and increase in fuel charges and rates of postage and stationery.

All these reasons to hike salary of legislators are not applicable for general public .... is not it? These increase of 16 crores will come from tax-payers money. And what will be the gain for commoners ... increased corruption? So good.
