Marathi journalist attacked

A journalist with a Marathi news channel was today allegedly thrashed by some unidentified persons while covering an incident of fire at Dadar, police said.

Mumbai: A journalist with a Marathi news
channel was today allegedly thrashed by some unidentified
persons while covering an incident of fire at Dadar, police
said.

Amit Joshi, a reporter with `Zee 24 Taas` -- a Marathi
news channel of Zee group -- was attacked with bamboo sticks
and an iron rod at a garment warehouse in central Mumbai this
evening.

"An FIR under IPC section 307 (Attempt to murder) has
been registered against unidentified persons for attacking the
journalist. We will take the visuals captured by the cameraman
to nab the accused soon," Deputy Police Commissioner S D
Baviskar said.

Joshi was interviewing locals about the incident when
some unidentified persons started arguing with him and later
thrashed him, injuring the reporter severely, police added.
He was taken to KEM hospital, they said.

The journalist was attacked even as the state government
is contemplating making physical assault on journalists a
Non-Bailable Offence.

Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe visited the
hospital to enquire about Joshi`s health and assured stern
action against the accused.

Mumbai Press Club has condemned the incident demanding
"immediate action against the culprits for the cowardly and
fatal assault on the reporter".
