Mumbai: Large parts of 'maximum city' Mumbai - fabled as the city that is always on the go – halted on Tuesday morning after a technical fault at a power generation unit that supplies electricity to the city.

With a shortfall of over 1200 MW of the total demand of around 3200 MW, many parts of the city are witnessing unending power cuts since morning.

Among the worst hit are areas like Juhu, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Santacruz East, Bandra, Kurla, Tilaknagar, Vikhroli and Sakinaka.

The fault occurred at a 500 MW unit of Tata Power. With the two other units of the company that generate 750 MW shut following a scheduled shutdown, the situation became unmanageable for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST), which buys electricity from Tata Power.

While no official comment was forthcoming, reports claimed that the situation will turn normal only by evening.
