Mumbai: Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday assured that Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority is capable of redeveloping sector-5 of Dharavi slums in Mumbai and said decision on the redevelopment of the remaining sectors has not been taken yet.

"MHADA is capable of redevelopment of one of the sectors of would redevelop sector-5," Chavan said in the state Legislative Council today.

However, the government is still undecided as to how the remaining four sectors would be redeveloped.

Chavan was responding to a question asked by MLC Subhash Chavan as to delay in redevelopment of Dharavi BDD chawls in the city.

The decision on whether MHADA would take care of remaining sectors or the private developers should be invited was yet to be taken, Chavan said.

The Chief Minister made it clear that Government's intention was to rehabilitate the local slum-dwellers, as well as to make profit for state treasury.

However, in the earlier global tendering process, state did not get the right offer, and quotations would have benefited only the developers, he said, adding therefore government was yet to decide the course of action for remaining sectors.

The Chief Minister also assured that government would consider rehabilitation of small-scale industries based in Dharavi.

As to redevelopment of BDD chawls, Minister of state for Housing Sachin Ahir said a meeting would be held with the Chief Minister soon to take decision on this.
