Amravati: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS)
today took out a morcha to the Collectorate here to oppose the
proposed Sophiya power project in the district.
Tension prevailed for a while at the Collectorate as
agitators clashed with the police.
The Raj Thackeray-led party organised the protest to
demand cancellation of the project at Nandgaon Peth area.
The morcha was led by MLA Pravin Darekar and district
convenor Pappu alias Mangesh Patil. Party activists raised
slogans against the project.
Darekar told Collector Richa Bagla that Vidarbha was
facing tremendous backlog of irrigation projects and it was
one of the reasons for farmer suicides in the region.
Sophiya power plant will end the irrigation capacity
of 36,000 hectares in the district and worsen the situation
for farmers, the MNS leader said.
He threatened to intensify the agitation if their
demand was not accepted by the Congress-NCP Government.
