Mumbai: At least two people were killed and 55 others were injured, including 45 policemen, on Saturday as a protest at Mumbai's Azad Maidan against the Assam riots and alleged attacks on Muslims in Myanmar turned violent.

Among the injured were some mediapersons. All injured were shifted to J J Hospital, St George Hospital, GT Hospital and Bombay Hospital, police said.

Hundreds of protesters, sporting black badges, belonging to several Muslim organisations were gathered at the Azad Maidan Ground in south Mumbai on a call given by a city-based outfit, Raza Academy, an organisation which claims to work for promoting Islamic culture.

The agitation was supported by other organisations like Sunni Jamaitul Ulma and Jamate Raza-e-Mustafa. Awami Vikas Party (AVP), a political outfit floated by former police officer Shamsher Khan Pathan, also took part in the protest.

During the demonstrations, the protesters turned unruly, police said. They indulged in stone-pelting, set fire to several vehicles, including OB (Outside Broadcast) vans of three private news channels, reports said.

Police had to resort to lathi-charge and opened fire in the air to disperse the violent crowd.

The situation is currently under control, said IG Law and Order, Mumbai.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said in a statement that the Crime Branch has been asked to probe "whose hand was behind the violence and how the protest turned so violent".

Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil while talking to Zee News appealed people to maintain peace.

Several suburban train services were briefly disrupted and road traffic was also affected due to the unrest.

Azad Maidan Ground, a regular venue for protests, is located near Mumbai civic body headquarters and CST Mumbai railway station. The bustling area wore a deserted look as policemen cordoned off the locality and patrolled the streets.

Meanwhile, Raza Academy distanced itself from the violence.

"While we were protesting at the ground, some people got aggressive and started behaving violently," Mohammed Saeed, general secretary of Raza Academy said.

"We never encourage violence and strongly condemn such acts," he added.

Some of u have commented that ``Muslims should find there own choice country n leave India``. I want to ask why? We have been living together for so many years in this country. This fight is for those who is living in our country illegaly with voter ID. Which is increasing unemployment, population any many problems. We should fight together (Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Christians) for disporting this illegal Bangladeshis

The muslim discontent in this country is very obvious for the reason we can see. The perpetators of Godhra have not been brought to justice. Both muslim and hindu fanatics for all heinous violence crime should be brought under a justice. Another aspect which i believe is very important at this stage is that our muslim clerics to urge the muslim mass to have faith(note i dont mean they r nt patriot, ofcourse they are).Muslim clerics could be a great contributor to our National Integration ambition. Lets bring back the history of common goodness of our long coherent society. Social media has a great impact for our mass. Our maturity can lead this country to a peace heaven.

Guys grow up.. I am sick of Hindus blaming Muslims of being this way (which is quite well shown in the comments here: read a few you`ll know) and Muslims trying to act as victims and generating hatred towards others. Live with the fact that this is a secular country where Muslims(or any other religion) person has as much rights as the Hindu. And if you and me(Hindus) can`t accept that then we can buzz off to some other nation. And to everyone, Religion is a very sensitive matter and try respecting that. And seriously speaking you bldy don`t have an option if you are living in India, so you bldy well get used to it and live in harmony than abusing each other.

Dear Vipul, At some extent what you are saying is correct and that`s the thinking of most of the Indians. The reason why we are having issue like this one is political which is due to Congress. However, we can not only blame to Congress, the people like you are also responsible for this. Our country was divided because of this type of thinking only. I recommend to increase your knowledge (read history not one which is taught in schools). Because this time if we don`t change our thinking then this time our country will not be divided but we will be ruled by some other country and won`t be able to even protest against it.

ANWAR HUSSAIN - MUMBAI
1) At first place, we cannot protest before our Govt. for incidents happening in a foreign country (Myanmar).(2) For what happened in Assam, the root cause is a local problem faced by the native Bodos, who perhaps object to Bangladesi people settling in their land. Protest for addressing Assam attrocities should be made before the Central Govt. in Delhi and that too by citizens of all states. I don`t find reason for gathering in Mumbai for showing protest for what is going in Assam. (3) Around the world there are several countries where common people are killed due to misrule or Dictatorship or other reasons. Should we think that if we gather in Mumbai, Govt. of those countries will take action ? Common people who take part in such gatherings should understand the purpose of such gathering. How will it help the cause. You never know, you may be roped in to join the gathering by political parties to meet their objectives etc. Hence keep cool. Think. Violence is certainly not the way to put your request before the Govt..

Highly appreciate Mr.Anwar hussain`s comment, progressive muslims like him should come forward to guide his community in the oroper manner.A similar incident happened in Ranchi many years ago when the muslim community protested against atrocities done by the jewish soldiers of Israel in West Bank and Gaza, just dont understand how protesting in Ranchi(Jharkhand State) would help in the palestinian cause, which is an international issue in another country.Anwar, people here dont value freedom, they should be happythat they are able to enjoy full freedom and serve the country instead of getting involved in unwanted protests, destroying public property and putting at risk people`s lives.

We condemn the killing of Innocent muslims in Burma as well as Assam. But i am not surprised with the biased nature of World Media over the killing of muslims as it has always been the case. All other non sense are shown in the name of news but when it comes to muslims all the media are silent. Their silence only reflects their mindset for a particular cimmunity.I only prary to God to protect muslims where ever they are targetted. Is the killing of innocent muslim not a act of terrorisim.

There are many Muslim countries in the world. If any Muslim in India finds difficult to live, let him leave this country and go to his choice of country. This is good for India also.
