Mumbai: The defence in the July 11, 2006
serial train blasts case today raised doubts over the
credibility of a witness alleging that he has been a witness
in another case pertaining to counterfeit currency being
probed by the National Investigating Agency (NIA).
Defence lawyer Wahab Khan, appearing for few accused in
both the cases during cross examination of the witness before
a special MCOCA court, pointed out that he was used by the
investigating agency ATS in other cases also.
"This witness is under the influence of the ATS and this
lowers the credibility of his evidence," Wahab said. However,
the witness denied that he had appeared as witness in any case
other than the train blasts case.
Special MCOCA Judge Y D Shinde has directed the
prosecution to submit before it documents pertaining to the
counterfeit currency case.
"If it is proved that he has acted as a witness in both
the cases, then the court can issue perjury notice against him
for lying under oath," Wahab said.
The witness was present at the house of brother of
arrested accused Tanveer Ansari, from where banned literature
and other incriminating materials were seized.
ATS has charged 13 persons alleged to be members of
Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), to have conspired
and executed seven bomb blasts that ripped the first class
compartments of local trains on July 11, 2006. Around 187
people died and over 800 were injured in the blast.
