Mumbai violence: Police detain 23 Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: A day after violence during a Muslim procession here left two people dead and 100 injured, including 45 policemen, a police official on Sunday said that police have started probing the incident.

"We have set up a special team to investigate the entire incident and find out the causes and the people behind it," Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy told the media.

Roy said police were also studying the speeches of organisers to determine if they were provocative or inflammatory.

A news channel has, meanwhile, claimed that two rifles and one pistol belonging to police were stolen during clashes. Also, some women constables were allegedly molested.

CCTV records are being scanned to identify the rioters responsible for the violence which left half of Mumbai paralysed for several hours.

The trouble affected a two kilometre radius around Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, opposite which the Azad Maidan, the main venue of the Saturday procession, is situated.

Roy said the extent of damage to public and private property was being studied. He added that the organisers will be ordered to compensate for it as per the laws.

In a related development, police have detained 23 people from south Mumbai for the violence.

They are being interrogated to know their antecedents and role in the violence that erupted during the massive procession taken out by Muslim groups to condemn attacks on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar, police said.

The violence followed alleged provocative speeches made by some leaders who urged the media not to suppress the coverage of the "atrocities" on Muslims.

The Indian Express, a daily, meanwhile, reported that organisers of the event have admitted “irresponsible speech” that led to rioting.

Soon after the speech, a group of youths started attacking some journalists and police personnel and damaged public and private vehicles.

Taking the police and organisers by surprise, the attacks quickly spread, engulfing media, police, even some participants in the procession, vehicles and media vans.

At the final count, 49 BEST buses were damaged, 12 police vans were damaged, including three which were burnt, 50 private vehicles, including three OB vans of private TV channels, which were torched.

The final toll in yesterday's violence was two dead and another 100 injured, including 45 policemen and three media persons, according to the City Disaster Control Centre.

The injured were rushed to public and private hospitals, of whom 34 have been discharged. The rest remain under treatment, officials said.

Security has been strengthened in Mumbai in the wake of yesterday’s violence.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has strongly condemned the violence at Azad Maidan, and ordered a crime branch probe into the violence that took place in the city.

Chavan, however, refused to blame the police of any mismanagement for the violence and said that the guardians of law did their job well.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had earlier asked people to maintain calm following the violent protest in Mumbai.

"I will talk to the Maharashtra Chief Minister," he said.

Home Minister RR Patil, who rushed to Mumbai on Saturday night, said all efforts would be made to nab those behind the incident.

Meanwhile, a high alert has been sounded all over the state. Also, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and State Reserve Police (SRP) personnel have been requisitioned.

Such incidents help BJP in their politics. Govt must quickly nab the culprits and punish them and I hope BJP will not play politics. If Raza Academy is involved, it must be banned along with other organizations.

This organized mob violence instigated by Mumbai Muslims has happened with the blessings of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and his ``Con``gress bosses in New Delhi. The time has come for the BJP and Shiv Sena to be on the alert to prevent the such mob violence reocurring in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra as well as the Talibanization of the this Maratha State and the rest of the nation. What is happening in Assam exposes how the dirty, rotten, scoundrel ``Con`gress Party has pitted one religion against another in India over the past 65 years in order to divide and rule this country. In so doing the ``Con`gress Party have blindsided the people with day-to-day hardships while it and political rouge allies loot India of its wealth. Please wake-up India and work to take our country back.

you are right salman and the media should focus on atrocities against the minorities in muslim majority countries. there is exception anywhere in the world. oops sorry, i meant muslim majority area. the violence against non-muslims is systematic and perhaps the world should unite in fighting this menace.

Why flareup more violence? You people always take all the things in communal line. Don`t understand any thing ales. Why minister should interfare to the internal matter of another country? Because they are MUSLIM? Only because of these u people hatred in Non-Islamic countries. If Burmies Muslims were of Indian citizen then it would have been a right move for Indian Govt.

Now communally biased and secterian unfit Mumbai police goes out to arrest muslim youths to implicate them with false cases, torture and harrassing their families after failed to maintain the law and order at the right time. No doubt Mumbai police force is notorious for harrassing the common and weakest citizens and moral policing instead keeping the city in order. Jai Ho !

You are absolutely wrong. This mis-happening seems to be a conspiracy against Muslims. Some miscreants have mingled with gathering & played this bad game. Investigation must be done in order to find out those bad elements. I fear investigation will be flopped and they will nab some muslims for hiding their incompetence because miscreants are very cunning and muslims are very soft targets.

Hindus be ready to leave this country, untill then vote for congress and communist parties. dont think that once you become minority you will get minority benefits because that will be changed and this country will become secular to islamic nation and you cannot see the same congress and communist people talking secular at that time.

The avoidance of violence in Asam led the formation of Mumbai violence. Why ignorance gad been done and illegal immigrants are allowed to enter in Asam from Bangladesh? Its to think that Media plays very vital roll in raising the issues. The people killed in Asam is just the cause of Government failure. It is true that illegal immigrates belong to some particular community. So what its the question of illegal immigrants not community. The illegal immigrants finds the good democracy in India and better job opportunities than that of Bangladesh. Their arrival in India will be welcomed if they follow proper immigration procedure. otherwise it will make situation worse r for both Indians and Asamies. The peoples of Asam should smartly marked up illegal immigrants and their data should be produce before courts, and case should be filed and wait for decision.Surely it can be done sorry to say if peoples of Asam can identify the illegal immigrants and kill them, they can also do the above measure. If Bangladeshis faith on our democracy and want to join us where we Indian lacked in believing our own judiciary system? -Prateek Srivastava
