Thane: Boats have been pressed into service to rush food articles, milk and medicines to a hamlet of 75 families in Murbad taluka`s Chikle village since the last two days, after an SOS was received, local tehsildar Prakash Joshi said on Friday.
The hamlet has been cut off from the world, following heavy downpour in the district, since the last two days, since the only bridge across the Kalu river, connecting the hamlet with the village, had crashed last year and was not repaired till date, an official spokesman from the Murbad tehsil office said. Moreover, the leftover side portion of the bridge has been washed away due to the downpour, leading to the present situation, sources at the district headquarters confirmed.
The Kalyan-Dombivili Municipal Corporation has made available a speed boat which can accommodate at least eight people and it is expected to ferry those wanting to cross over to the village from the isolated hamlet today, revenue officer Abhijeet Deshmukh, of the tehsil office said.
The local tehsil is keeping monitoring the situation and had taken all precautions to avert any eventuality, he said.
