Mumbai: Union Minister of Road Transport Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday congratulated Devendra Fadvanis after he was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in Maharashtra. Fadvanis is now officially appointment as the first BJP chief minister of the state.
“Am sure that under Devendra Fadnavis Maharashtra will get a new direction, will develop under his leadership,” Gadkari told reporters here.
The names of both Fadnavis and Gadkari was doing the rounds for the CM post but the Union Minister had repeatedly ruled himself out. He reiterated his stand after a meeting with top RSS leaders in Nagpur last week.
On Sunday, the BJP had announced that the party was willing to form the government in Maharashtra in alliance with the Shiv Sena.
And in an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna, the Shiv Sena had expressed its will to support any person chosen by the BJP as the next CM of Maharashtra.
The BJP and Shiv Sena broke their 25-year old alliance ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls over seats sharing.
The BJP emerged as the single-largest party in Maharashtra winning 122 of the 288 seats. The Shiv Sena finished second with 63 seats. The NCP had offered external support to the BJP for government formation in the state.
