Sangli: Suspected Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena activists on Tuesday attacked migrant workers from North India and ransacked their properties in adjoining Kolhapur district after a two-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a labourer from Jharkhand.
Two persons received minor injures when the activists, armed with sticks, went on a rampage and targeted migrant workers, their shops and houses in Laksyateerth Vasavth, the area where the rape incident took place yesterday, Police Control Room sources in Kolhapur told a news agency by phone.
Police used batons to disperse the violent mob and restore order.
The accused, Rajusingh Bablu Singh, who was working at a construction site in the area, has been arrested, sources said.
The victim, whose condition is said to be stable, is the daughter of a watchman who too worked at the construction site in the South Maharashtra district, about 400km from Mumbai, they added.
