Mumbai: A local court today issued notices
to the jailer of the Arthur Road Prison and a police officer
after Javed Rehman Shaikh, arrested in connection with the
rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in suburban Kurla,
alleged that he was tortured by the police in jail.
Javed, who is presently in judicial custody, was produced
before the Vikhroli metropolitan magistrate via video
conference today. Javed told the magistrate that the
investigating officer of the case had come to jail last week
and physically assaulted him.
Javed`s lawyer has also filed an application before the
court stating the allegations leveled by him against the
police.
"Even when he was in police custody, Javed was physically
and mentally tortured and forced to confess to the crime. He
was beaten up with a belt and was also administered to
electric shocks," Javed`s lawyer Amin Solkar said.
The Magistrate has directed the Arthur Road Jail
Superintendent of Police and the investigating officer of
Nehru Nagar police to file their reply to the allegations by
August 21.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dilip Sawant has, however,
rubbished the allegations.
