Now, Shiv Sena wants Aurangabad renamed

After the decision to change the name of Aurangzeb Road to Abdul Kalam Road in Delhi, the Shiv Sena wants Aurangabad to be renamed as Sambhaji Nagar.

Mumbai: After the decision to change the name of Aurangzeb Road to Abdul Kalam Road in Delhi, the Shiv Sena wants Aurangabad to be renamed as Sambhaji Nagar.

Sambhaji is the son of Maratha warrior Shivaji.

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has said that the party also wants Aurangabad airport renamed as Raje Sambhaji Airport, as per media reports.

Uddhav's party has been demanding for change of name of Aurangabad for the last several years.

But the demand by the Sena has drawn criticism of from various quarters.

Well-known writer Balchandra Nemade was reported by the media as saying that the demand by the Sena was an effort to alter history.

But some have backed the Sena's demand.

Another writer, Sadanand More, who heads the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, has welcomed the move to rename Aurangabad.

However, he has said that the city should be named after Aurangzeb's elder brother Dara Shikoh.
